About Us

Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum is a not-for-profit company working to further the presence and awareness of contemporary art in Sheffield through joint programming, audience development and profile raising activities. The directors of the company are representatives of Bloc, Museums Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, Site Gallery, S1 Projects, Yorkshire ArtSpace Society and independent artists.

The Forum’s aims are to:
- Develop Sheffield’s reputation regionally, nationally and internationally as a centre for contemporary art.
- Build and develop the audiences for contemporary art.
- Create direct and indirect opportunities for the professional development of artists.

SCAF undertakes marketing and publicity work for the contemporary visual art sector in the city, publishing the ART map and running online listings for contemporary art exhibitions and events in Sheffield.

SCAF has also programmed and co-ordinated three city-wide events to date. The first was Artlink in 2001, followed by Art Sheffield 03, a multi venue festival in 2003 that exhibited work by over 50 local, national and international artists related to the ‘urban experience’. Our third city-wide event, Art Sheffield 05: Spectator T took place from 29 October until 27 november 2005. This was a high profile city-wide festival involving 12 new commissions and work by 41 established and emerging artists, which drew a total of 48,446 visits, 44% of these travelling from outside of Sheffield to the event. And most recently Art Sheffield 08: Yes, No & Other Options, which involved 38 artists, 15 of which created new commissions. This took place in February/March 2008 and attracted over 100,000 visits.

As well as bringing international and UK artists into the city to show alongside Sheffield based artists during the Art Sheffield festivals, SCAF also runs projects presenting work by artists living and working in the city to international audiences. The first project was The Sheffield Pavilion, which took place in Summer 2007 and was launched at Venice Biennale.

To nurture audiences for the Art Sheffield events and other contemporary art activity in the city, SCAF co-ordinates the Art Ambassador Scheme, an innovative audience development iniative that has been running since 2002. Working with a handful of representatives from organisations based in the city, the scheme aims to tap into peer group marketing to spread positive word of mouth about art in Sheffield.
