Opening event at Access Space
20×20 2010
Friday 3 September 5.30-8.00pm
An exhibition from an open call for works measuring 20î by 20î. This will be Access Spaceís 5th yearly 20 X 20 exhibition. The theme is simple - anything goes, as long as it is 20 inches by 20 inches and it can be hung in the space. Every year the Open Call for the show brings in a hugely diverse response from Access Space particpants, local artists and artists from outside South Yorkshire. http://www.artsheffield.org/listings/?p=3436

Artist Talk at Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery
Origin010: Chris Jones and Paul Evans in conversation
Thursday 9 September 7.30-8.30pm
An event associated with Origin010: new work by Paul Evans, Chris Jones and Humanstudio. Origin010 brings together drawing, painting, text and animation to address our complex relationship with nature, challenge the anthropocentric world view and explore what it means to be alive. http://www.artsheffield.org/listings/?p=3342

Two openings in one night
Bloc & Site Gallery
Friday 10 September 7-9pm
7-9pm
Bloc
Bearing Elsewhere, Hondartza Fraga
Bearing Elsewhere is the first solo UK exhibition of new works by Hondartza Fraga. Drawing and video are the chosen mediums to ponder about the notion of journey, both geographical and mental, as a place in itself. Taking the position of a traveller who observes the world from the safe distance of an endless wandering, neither here nor there. This new work seeks to confront the fictional and elusive character of home and the exotic. http://www.artsheffield.org/listings/?p=3401
7-9pm
Site Gallery
For the Birds
This exhibition looks at songs and music as a social phenomenon ñ particularly in relation to its manipulative, participatory, and activating qualities. For the Birds directly refers to a period in time when issues about inclusion, exclusion and participation caused heated debates in the Western music world. This evokes the issue of songs and music in the (semi) public sphere, as an activating, manipulative or social binding tool, a notion very much present in the works in this exhibition. http://www.artsheffield.org/listings/?p=3419

Their works reflect upon various types of sound, song and music, varying from background music, national anthem, choir music, and the Islamic call for prayer. http://www.artsheffield.org/listings/?p=3416

12X12X12: The nostalgic iconoclast or whispered glitches
Stephen Carley’s studio
Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 September 11am-3pm
The 12th and final instalment in this (mostly) studio based project by Sheffield artist, Stephen Carley. Since early last year Carley’s studio has been the context for a variety of monthly exhibitions or ‘visual trials’. Sometimes existing artifacts are exhibited, or the space adapted or changed in some way or used for collaborative ventures. Guest curators are occasionally invited. The concentration is fully on process, ideas, context and communication with an audience and build up a coherent body of work filtered by the structure of 12X12 and the interaction with an audience. http://www.artsheffield.org/listings/?p=3309

Opening at Access Space
m e a n s of e s c a p e, Rosie Etherington
Friday 17 September 5.30-8.00pm
New photography work by Rosie Etherington. m e a n s of e s c a p e is a reaction to the mundanities, sorrows and loneliness of modern life. These works offer some thoughts on escaping oneself; they are daydreams into the world of what-could-be and narratives on adventures taken when it becomes too much to consider the question- what does an empty room look like? http://www.artsheffield.org/listings/?p=3426
