Press Release: Sept 2011
A brand new App for Art in Sheffield
Keeping apace with fast moving developments in digital communications, Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum have developed the first official App for Art in Sheffield, offering iPhone and iPad users a comprehensive guide to contemporary art in the city.
The App, which will be free to download this Autumn, offers full listings of exhibitions and events across various galleries and venues, along with other key features to help you get more out of the vibrant art scene in Sheffield.
Features include an ‘at-a-glance’ overview of what’s on now, so you can find out what’s on near you, with directions from your current location, as well as more in depth information to engage readers further about current and forthcoming exhibition. This will include a series of video and audio podcasts, released from September to March next year. There will also be a calendar for planning visits in advance, options to personalise listings by adding favourites to your own calendar and create reminders for openings, talks and events, and also comments, where visitors can share thoughts and experiences with others.
“Since 2001 we have been providing gallery visitors in Sheffield with a what’s on guide, moving from printed ‘ART’ leaflets to online listings a few years ago” says Project Co-ordinator Jo Nancarrow, Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum. “We were keen to take the next logical yet innovative step, and extend our offer to the public, producing the first ever citywide art based App that guides people around the galleries”.
This App is designed for all kinds of gallery goers; it works on various levels, for those interested in going to exhibition openings with friends; for those who are grappling with the ideas behind the work; people wanting a taster of exhibitions by watching videos and reading more before visiting; those planning a visit in advance; or simply for people who just enjoy spending easy Saturday afternoons browsing galleries at their own pace.
For those without iPhones/ipads, the Art in Sheffield online listing service (artsheffield.org) will have a complete overhaul, and will be fully maximized for all smartphone operating systems, including Android, blackberry, Symbian and Windows.
The App will launch at the end of September at an exciting time for Sheffield, concurrent with Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2011 coming to the city for the first time since 1993. This selected exhibition of the best new art from across the UK offers viewers an exciting opportunity to see the work of a new generation of artists. At a particularly vibrant and active time in the city’ history, this is the perfect time to both host New Contemporaries and launch the new Art in Sheffield app.
