Art Sheffield is a not-for-profit company working to further the presence and awareness of contemporary art in Sheffield through joint programming, audience development and profile raising activities. Founded in 1999 as Sheffield Contemporary Art Forum and led by a consortium of representatives from Sheffield-based organisations Bloc Projects, Museums Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, Site Gallery, S1 Artspace and Yorkshire Artspace, Art Sheffield focuses on advocacy for venues, artists and contemporary art projects in the city. Art Sheffield Limited is a company limited by guarantee and acts as the accountable body.
Art Sheffield aims to:
- Develop Sheffield’s reputation nationally and internationally as a centre for contemporary art.
- Build and sustain audiences for contemporary art.
- Create direct and indirect opportunities for the professional development of artists.
- Inform communities of contemporary art activities in Sheffield
Since 2001 Art Sheffield has coordinated a number of citywide events and projects including the Art Sheffield Festival bringing international, national and regional artists together in the city. Art Sheffield has delivered four city-wide festivals. Now in its fifth year, the Art Sheffield Festival will be launched on the 5th October 2013.
Art Sheffield’s on-going activities consist of a listings website, an art map which can be picked up in any of the consortium venues, a free iPhone app which can be downloaded from the iTunes store, social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook and a monthly newsletter.
