Blk Art Group Symposium

Blk Art Group Symposium

Call for Interest

Are you interested in helping Museums Sheffield shape a symposium in February 2012 which will bring together key players associated with the Blk Art Group to reappraise the cultural and artistic legacy of the early 1980’s?

The Symposium is planned as a day event bringing together key players associated with the Blk Art Group in order to reappraise the cultural and artistic legacy of the early 1980’s.

The event takes place in February 2012 as part of Museums Sheffield Blk Art Group exhibition public programme.

The history and legacy of the group continues to prompt academic, artistic, political and cultural debate. The Symposium seeks to engage with this debate and aims to shine a light on these contested discourses and connect the experiences of the early 80s with those of today. The timing of the event marks the 30th anniversary of the Blk Art Group’s first convention. The symposium will be of interest to students, artists and arts professionals, academics, community cultural representatives, independent adult learners, young cultural leaders.

Deadline for submissions: 6pm Thurs 29 Sept 2011

Assembly 11: LAST REQUESTS
Friday 30 Sept
- Saturday 1 Oct 2011

ASSEMBLY is a series of one-off events offering new and emerging artists a platform to show or perform experimental ideas or work in progress, within the gallery and its adjoining courtyard. Each ASSEMBLY event is themed; previous events have evolved around the themes of text, light, time and computer inspired artwork. Last year we focussed on Correspondence, inviting artists from Istanbul to work with Sheffield based artists to collaborate over geographical and cultural distances.

This year we want to offer an opportunity to those artists working in Sheffield studios to show work together in an unrestrained setting. Bloc will send out an open invite to all studio holders in Sheffield to submit work for this Assembly event.

We want artists to submit works that they consider to be a guilty pleasure. Something they have enjoyed making but have been unsure, or even ashamed about showing. Consider this opportunity to be a last request, or desert island disc. Is there a piece in your oeuvre that is dear to your heart but perhaps unsuitable to the outside world, something that remains hidden in your studio? Now is the time to set it free!

All mediums will be accepted, we would prefer smaller scaled works, however size can be negotiated. Our gallery space is not massive, (6×6m), however, we want to break out into the courtyard, corridors and newly renovated washroom.

All artists are responsible for bringing and collecting their works. Because of the nature of this exhibition we will not allow any drilling into the walls. All work must either be freestanding or be able to be displayed using blu-tac, sticky tabs or pins.

To request an application form please send an e-mail with ASSEMBLY:11 as the subject to info@blocprojects.co.uk. There will be a £5 admin fee; all money raised goes towards the running of Bloc Projects. You must be a studio holder in Sheffield to be eligible to submit.
