Artlink 2001

Contemporary Visual Art in Sheffield
13 - 27 October 2001

Artlink was a two week event  highlighting the wealth of contemporary visual art activity taking place in the city. From large scale exhibitions involving international artists to projects by innovative local artists’ groups, Artlink demonstrated Sheffield to be vibrant centre for contemporary visual art.

After  recent development in the city, including the redevelopment of Site Gallery in 1998 and the opening of the Millennium Galleries in 2000 and Yorkshire ArtSpace Society’s new premises in 2001, Sheffield has created international standard venues for showing contemporary art exhibitions. The Artlink project provided an ideal opportunity for audiences to get to know them.

Artlink’s objectives were to develop new young audiences for the contemporary art, to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by a co-ordinated approach to promoting visual arts and to raise awareness of Sheffield’s contemporary art locally, regionally and nationally. It is of key interest to present a ‘snapshot’ of contemporary art in the city and convey a message about the wealth of activity year-round, rather than suggesting a one-off concentration of activity.

Events profiled included:

Sacred and Profane at The Mappin Gallery: Contemporary artists’ response to the dual qualities of the spiritual and sacrilegious. Included Cathy de Monchaux, Adam Chodsko, Marc Quinn and Mat Collishaw

Immediate 2 at Site Gallery: new work new media. The best new art from across the north,  selected by artist Monika Oechsler and Emma Dexter, Curator, Tate Modern.  Existing work and new commissions by 13 of the most innovative and experimental artists from post-graduate courses across the North.

Yorkshire ArtSpace opened their new venue with a Site Gallery joint commission, featuring work by Helen Sear.

Third Angel Live Art Company presented Pills for Modern Living, a lightbox photographic installation.

Interstellar Art Group presented Tree Stripped Bare, a projection piece at S1 Artspace windows.

Exhibit presented recent paintings by Ann Gillies in the Showroom Cinema.

Mongrel Monitor Art group organised  ‘Idea’, a temporary shop selling affordable packaged art by national and international artists.

SCAF also organised an ART bus that linked together the different sites, and allowed people to move around the city over one weekend.

Prism

Welcoming submissions from artists

Prism is a new programme of contemporary art events commissioned by The Showroom Cinema, Sheffield. Taking place after Sheffield Hallam University’s Transmission lectures, it aims to take on the themes discussed and expand them into an evening of new commissioned work. Submissions will be taken from both established artists and promising Hallam students, who will receive a portion of Prism’s proceeds to help finance their 2009 Degree Show. Each event will focus on audio, video, performative and interactive works and will also feature live music. Over the course of the programme work will be exhibited in The Showroom Café, Cinema 1, the adjoining light well and the nearby Workstation foyer and upper level. A prism splits a beam of light, expanding its scope and exposing the spectrum it contains. Based in the centre of the cultural industries quarter, Prism will encourage a similar process. Engaging with the area it inhabits, the programme aims to create social evenings in which creative communities can converse around the spectrum of artistic interest.
